Pride Month may be officially over in New York, but our appreciation for LGBTQIA+ healthcare heroes lasts all year long.
New York City has long been a beacon of LGBTQ+ activism, from the Stonewall riots to the response to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. Many of the city’s most trusted LGBTQ+ health organizations were founded in response to those pivotal moments, and some in the years following—and they all continuously provide lifesaving care, advocacy, and community support today.
Below, we’re spotlighting just a few of the powerful NYC-based organizations leading the way in LGBTQ+ healthcare and mental wellness.
The Trevor Project: The Trevor Project is the leading suicide prevention and 24/7 crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people. Focused on suicide prevention efforts for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning youth, they offer a toll-free telephone number where confidential assistance is provided by trained counselors.
The Center: The Center is a safe and affirming community center for LGBTQ+ New Yorkers to access lifesaving services and make meaningful connections. Visitors have access to a full multidisciplinary treatment team of social workers, mental health & substance abuse counselors, nurses, and a psychiatrist.
Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC): As the world’s first HIV/AIDS service organization, GMHC is working to end the AIDS epidemic and uplift the lives of all affected. In 1981, eighty men gathered in writer Larry Kramer’s apartment to address the “gay cancer” and to raise money for research. This informal meeting provided the foundation of what would soon become Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC).
Apicha Community Health Center: Apicha Community Health Center provides high quality health care services that fill the gaps not covered by grants or insurance. Their care is focused on low income, LGBTQ+, and AAPI patients seeking services.
Callen-Lorde: Callen-Lorde is the global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare. Since the days of Stonewall, they have been transforming lives in LGBTQ+ communities through excellent comprehensive care, provided free of judgment and regardless of ability to pay. To further this mission, Callen-Lorde promotes health education and wellness, and advocates for LGBTQ+ health issues.
SAGE: SAGE leads in addressing issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning and other self-identifying members of the community (LGBTQ+) aging. During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, SAGEConnect emerged as a vital tool to alleviate the loneliness felt by countless LGBTQ+ elders confined to their homes. In January of this year, SAGE partnered with HearMe, an LGBTQ+-founded mental wellness app that allows clients to text one-on-one with trained empathetic listeners, 24/7.
These organizations provide essential health services to the LGBTQ+ community–not just during Pride month, but every day. Whether it’s offering affirming care, mental health support, or crisis services, they’re helping LGBTQ+ individuals access the dignity, safety, and compassion they deserve in healthcare.
At Playback Health, we’re proud to stand with these leaders and continue building technology that supports inclusive, equitable care for all. 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
